Bishop Poggo Vist To Mombasa

Visit of the Secretary General of the Anglican Communion to the Diocese of Mombasa

ministry

Earlier this week, the Diocese of Mombasa was greatly honoured to receive the Rt. Rev. Anthony Poggo, Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, on his official visit to the Anglican Church of Kenya. He was warmly hosted by our Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Alphonce Mwaro Baya, and engaged in a series of meaningful fellowships, visits, and discussions that highlighted both the spiritual heritage and the vibrant mission of the Diocese.

1.Fellowship and Encounters

One of the key moments of the visit was a time of fellowship with diocesan staff and clergy at Mombasa Memorial Cathedral, where Bishop Poggo joined in prayer, reflection, and conversation. This gathering provided space for encouragement, mutual learning, and a deeper sense of connection between the Diocese of Mombasa and the wider Anglican family. The clergy and staff were uplifted by his words of support and his presence among them as a representative of the global Communion.

2. Visits to Institutions and Historic Sites

In addition to this fellowship, Bishop Poggo toured several important institutions, historic sites, and community projects within the Diocese. His itinerary included:

  • Bishop Hannington Institute of Theology and Development – where he learned about the Diocese’s commitment to training, theological education, and equipping future church leaders.
  • St Paul’s Church, Rabai – the cradle of Christianity on the East African coast, and the nearby Krapf Memorial Museum, a testimony to the missionary legacy of Dr. Johann Ludwig Krapf.
  • Emmanuel Church, Kengeleni (Frere Town) – established by the Church Missionary Society in 1889 as a place of worship for freed slaves in Mombasa. This historic church stands as a profound witness to liberation, hope, and the transforming power of the Gospel.
  • The Artificial Forest Project in Mgombezi – The Artificial Forest Project in Mgombezi, a pioneering environmental initiative of the Diocese, reflecting its strong commitment to creation care and sustainable development.
  • Each of these visits illustrated the diverse ways in which the Diocese of Mombasa is living out its mission — through education, evangelism, heritage preservation, parish ministry, and environmental stewardship.

    3. Voices from the Visit

Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, Bishop Alphonce Mwaro Baya remarked:

Hosting the Secretary General of the Anglican Communion is a significant honour and privilege for the Diocese of Mombasa and the Province of Kenya at large. It represents an opportunity to engage with the global Anglican community, enhance dialogue, and strengthen relationships. By welcoming Bishop Anthony Poggo, we demonstrate our commitment to unity, cooperation, and shared values. We look forward to a meaningful exchange, mutual learning, and a strengthened partnership between the Diocese of Mombasa and the Anglican Communion

In response, Bishop Poggo expressed deep appreciation for the life and witness of the Diocese of Mombasa:

It has been a joy to visit the Diocese of Mombasa this week and I give thanks for their faithful witness and the opportunity to encourage them in their ministry. They are delivering a wide range of mission and community projects. Bishop Alphonce’s vision and passion for evangelism and church planting is commendable. It was good to see one of the sites where the diocese will soon be putting up a church. I am also impressed by the diocese’s provision of theological training and discipleship, as well as its deep commitment to environmental action through the Artificial Forest Project. May God continue to strengthen the church in this region.

    Strengthening Communion

This visit marks a historic moment for the Diocese of Mombasa. It was not only an honour to host the Secretary General, but also a unique opportunity to demonstrate the Diocese’s commitment to mission, to highlight its contributions to the wider Church, and to affirm its place within the global Anglican Communion. The time shared together fostered stronger ties of fellowship, encouraged mutual understanding, and renewed our collective call to proclaim Christ faithfully in word and deed.

The Diocese of Mombasa gives thanks to God for this visit, for the encouragement brought by Bishop Poggo, and for the strengthened bonds of unity that continue to link us with Anglicans across the world. Together, we remain committed to the shared mission of evangelism, discipleship, social transformation, and stewardship of creation — to the glory of God and the service of His people.
